I grew up creating. It seemed I was always creating something: coloring a picture, making little clay creatures, using found objects for art, or illustrating a made-up story. Throughout my youth, frequent visits to art museums sparked my interest in classical and impressionist art, especially portraiture. I had the awesome privilege to work under and alongside some extremely talented artists for seven years while I pursued my Bachelor of Science in Visual Art and Master of Fine Arts (with a focus in oil painting). Art school grounded me in the basics of visual art: composition, concept, drawing, value, edges, and color. But it did more than that; it set me on a lifelong journey of pursuing painting, creativity, and thinking about what it is I want to communicate. Since then, I have continued to hone my craft, in technique and subject. The message of my work is evolving, as I continue to explore the question, What do I want to say with my art? I find that in a number of my paintings, I’ve chosen a subject caught in a quiet or reflective moment, a moment apart from the rest of humanity. Once a daydreaming girl and now mother to a daydreaming daughter, I see myself reflected in my daughter’s faraway moments and in the subjects I subconsciously gravitate toward.
Art is very personal for me; it is a part of how I am knit together. My desire as an artist is that those viewing my paintings will see the same beauty that I see in my subjects, will feel the “soulfulness” behind the face, will sense the incredible value that I believe is intrinsic to every human being.
In painting, I find a unique and incredibly expressive language that I desire to continue exploring the rest of my life. Soli Deo gloria.
